Self assessment

Some 295 250 taxpayers submitted their 2023-24 self-assessment tax return in the first week of the new tax year of whom about 67 870 people filed on 6 April HMRC has revealed. This compares with 246 210 returns received in the equivalent week in 2023.

Customs

Businesses exporting goods have less than one month left to move across to the customs declaration service (CDS). From 4 June export declarations must be submitted through CDS when it replaces the customs handling import and export freight (CHIEF) system for all trade declarations. The CDS has been running since 2018.

Capital allowances

HMRC has published new promotional material highlighting common errors in plant and machinery allowances claims. The department states that this does not represent any change in the law or policy but should read in conjunction with its capital allowances guidance on GOV.UK.
