Self assessment

More than 63 500 taxpayers filed their 2020-21 tax return online on 6 April HMRC has revealed. In total some 950 000 online returns have been submitted so far this tax year. In the past five tax years HMRC says the number of taxpayers filing on the first day of the new tax year has almost trebled from 22 885 in 2017 to 63 521 in 2021. In a bid to encourage more taxpayers to file early HMRC has published information on how to complete the return and what taxpayers need to get started.
