Online self-serve time-to-pay facility used by 20,000 taxpayers

Since April 2021, more than 20,000 taxpayers have used HMRC’s online monthly payment plan service to spread their 2020-21 self-assessment tax bill, totalling £46m. Last year, 123,000 taxpayers used the service to spread tax worth £460m.

HMRC is reminding taxpayers that they have the option of using this self-serve online facility to agree time to pay for income tax self-assessment liabilities of under £30,000. They can set up their own time-to-pay arrangement as long as they:

  • have filed their 2020-21 tax return;
  • owe less than £30,000;
  • are within 60 days of the payment deadline; and
  • plan to pay their debt off within the next 12 months.

Taxpayers who owe more than £30,000, or need longer to pay, should call the self-assessment payment helpline on 0300 200 3822.
