A call to action for gender parity.

This week marks International Women’s Day – an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women – and which, this year, focuses on the theme of ‘embracing equity’ with a call to action to accelerate gender parity.

At Taxation, we are extremely fortunate to feature articles and contributions by the most knowledgeable members of the tax profession every week, but we felt it was only right that this issue should be dedicated exclusively to highlighting the work of some of our female colleagues, and the issues that may affect women to a greater degree.

I would very much like to emphasise that these week’s authors only represent a tiny minority of the vastly knowledgeable women who regularly contribute to the magazine and, if space wasn’t an issue, we would have been able to include articles by many of our other esteemed contributors.

The world of tax – as indeed the world at large – has moved towards greater gender parity in a very visible way in the past 30 years and Ali Sapsford paints a hopeful picture where women in the tax profession are no longer taken to task for their sartorial choices but are increasingly seen as equals and are represented at the top table along with their ‘alpha male’ colleagues.

But as Tasneem Kadiri, chair of Women in Tax, rightly points out there is still a long way to go and we still do not have proportionate representation of women at partner and director level in the tax profession. This is why Women in Tax raises its own call to action and asks men to be ‘male allies’ to help to even out the level playing field for women. Tasneem even gives a list of practical tips for men to support women. Men… no excuses!

If you do one thing...

Women in Tax is organising a number of events throughout the year (womenin.tax/events). Men are very much encouraged to attend as allies!
