Treasury support schemes cost billions

Government statistics released in May reveal that:

  • eight million jobs have now been furloughed with £11.1bn claimed so far through the coronavirus job retention scheme (CJRS);
  • two million self-employment income support (SEISS) claims have been submitted worth £6.1bn;
  • some 581 586 applications have been made under the bounce back loan scheme of which so far 464 393 have been approved worth £14.18bn;
  • under the coronavirus business interruption loan scheme there have been 81 124 applications and so far 40 564 loans worth £7.25bn have been approved; and 
  • there have been 496 applications for coronavirus large business interruption loans with 86 approved so far totalling £0.59bn.
