I am sure that those nice people at HMRC would just love to give back to former Matalan chief executive Angus Monro the £800,000-plus tax that he overpaid in error.
Following the decision of the
High Court, and despite the sympathy of the judge and the acknowledgement all round that he paid too much tax, the Court of Appeal has just ruled that his amended tax return was filed late, so no go.
I see that Matalan has a
28-day return policy to get your money back.
If you work for HMRC and are thinking of taking any recent purchases back to Matalan, it might be worth getting round there sharpish before there’s a change of policy towards their employees.
Who said that tax doesn’t have to be taxing?

Taxation.co.uk has other tips on getting your money back from HMRC.
