My delightful colleagues on The Tax Journal tell me their editor, Alison, once suffered acute embarrassment after stepping on stage to present an award at an Institute of Indirect Taxation ceremony. She found she was wearing the same glamorous dress as the gong's recipient - and this fashion faux pas was such a hoot it merited space in an edition of the Journal. I reckon Alison (as opposed to Taxation's Allison) should have been grateful that only one other party-goer was identically kitted out. At the Taxation Awards next month, there are going to be dozens of people all wearing the same outfit as me. Oh, the shame! It'll be only the third time I've worn a dinner suit. The first occasion was my secondary school prom-type night, and the second was New Year's Eve 1999. Both events were disasters of the Pompeian kind. I've no doubt, though, that 22 May at London's Hilton will be quite the opposite. That is, as long as no one turns up wearing the same clip-on bow tie as mine.
