The Chartered Institute of Taxation, as readers will be aware, favours an initialism when abbreviating its name: CIOT, pronounced 'see-eye-oh-tee'.

But why that rather than an acronym, which one would say as 'see-ott'?

I put this question to the institute and received an emphatic reply.

'See-ott sounds terrible,' I was told.

Fair enough.
