The winners of yesterday’s third annual Maven Partners lawn bowls event agreed to speak to Taxation, but first we had to promise to plug their employer, HBSC.

At least, I think that was the firm’s name; I left my notebook at home this morning. If I recall correctly, the captain of the HSCB team, pictured here, was Carol – that’s her on the… I’m gonna say the right – and one of the blokes was called Matt Smith, like the Doctor Who actor. He used to play for Aston Villa reserves (the HCSB guy, not the Timelord dude, who is, in fact, a Blackburn Rovers fanatic).

The SHBC victory came at the end of very convivial afternoon in Finsbury Square that saw last year’s champs from EY losing a gripping final, and everyone enjoying some very fine grub and plenty of Pimm’s. So, thanks to Rob, Matt and the rest of the good folk at Maven for their generosity.

It wasn’t just the BCHS side, named Jacattac, that claimed glory. Our very own Richard won second prize in the raffle to raise money for Centre Point, a charity that supports young homeless people.

The Taxation team finished comfortably mid-table – here’s Mike in action – but we were winners in a way, our souls enriched from having laid eyes on this beauty.
