Concern about the issue of HMRC and tax-spend

I am writing to thank you for your article You gotta have faith. It was an excellent review of the problems practitioners have with HMRC.

The only point missing was that HMRC should remember the adage that once you start digging a hole digging further is counterproductive to getting yourself out of the hole.

However I am concerned about the issue of HMRC and tax-spend (as opposed to collection).

Somehow I resent being told by HMRC that when there is a valid dispute as to whether there is or is not a tax liability somehow my clients should pay up so that HMRC can ensure that the government has enough money to carry out its spending plans.

In my view spending is nothing to do with HMRC. Their job is to enforce the tax law and collect monies that are due. The moral or political...
