Excuse me while I take a few deep breaths and count to ten. I am in a state of shock at HMRC's SA Online system.

Before I go on it is important to bear in mind that this time next year tax returns i.e. those filed later than 31 October will have to be filed electronically except in a few specific circumstances.

In theory I do not have a problem with this apart from an innate dislike of officials telling me what to do and how to do it. HMRC have promised that their online systems will be able to cope. Indeed.
