HMRC will not open any formal income tax self assessment enquiries between Monday 20 October and Friday 31 October.
The embargo will be for this year only.
HMRC say they have taken this decision 'as this year has been one of massive change for self assessment (including the introduction of the 31 October paper filing deadline), and we want to support tax agents as much as possible during this busy period'.
Welcoming the announcement, Baker Tilly's Mike Down said this was a very helpful move by HMRC, in particular for accountants busy preparing paper returns for their clients.
