I was interested to read in 'Delayed repayments' that HMRC had ‘categorically denied’ that they were delaying the processing of paper self- assessment tax returns where refunds were due.

I have not noticed any particular problems with repayment cases but certainly there has been a significant increase in delays (and errors!) in dealing with paper returns for 2007-08 and I began to wonder in the same way as the other reader.

The rush at the end of October is irrelevant to this – one tax return submitted in May was processed in October.

However one area where delays have occurred on an even worse level is where corporation tax returns include a loss carried back to the previous year.

When I first got involved with tax in the 1970s delays in dealing with such claims occurred in less than 1% of cases – if ever.

These days it seems that less than 1% are dealt with without a reminder – I cannot recall the last one of mine that did.
