'How many old folk ever check their codes?'

I note that the Chartered Institute of Taxation is questioning HMRC about notices of coding. I have been a chartered accountant for over 60 years and I still do some work in the family practice.

When I approached my 85th birthday I received incorrect notices of coding for my small pension with ‘BR’ as the new code. In fact the old code was correct at around 140.

It took about a dozen telephone calls and seven incorrect notices of coding before this was rectified.

This year my wife is approaching her 85th birthday – and guess what? My wife received ‘BR’ notices of coding for her small pension from the same source as mine and it has taken me at least a dozen telephone calls and two letters to HMRC (not that I ever receive a reply).
