6.9 submissions by 31 January

The number of self assessment (SA) returns filed via the internet continues to increase each year, according to the latest HMRC figures.

A total of 6,907,410 taxpayers submitted their details online by the 31 January deadline.

The figure – representing around 78% of all returns submitted for 2009/10 – is nearly half a million more than the previous record high from 2009/09. Just over 6.4 million SA taxpayers filed online by 31 January 2010, a 12% rise on 12 months previously.

The final day of last month was the busiest; the Revenue received 572,455 digital SA returns (another record), and the rush hour occurred between 4pm and 5pm, when 49,367 returns were submitted.
