HMRC say they are unable to correct the online time discrepancy between their own validation service that uses British standard time and the government gateway, which employs Greenwich mean time, because the latter service is used by parties other than the tax department.

The announcement is included in the latest edition of Agent Update, the bi-monthly round up of news for tax advisers.

It also identifies a problem when the Revenue is notified by tax return that a partnership has ceased. When the return is being processed automatically, the taxman’s system is not updating the cessation date.

Partnership returns have been issued to some defunct partnerships as a result. Affected parties must contact HMRC to advise that a return has been incorrectly issued.

The new Agent Update marks the next meeting of the issues overview group as 9 December. The discussion will focus on how and what improvements could be made to the Working Together initiative. Suggestions should be referred the adviser’s professional body representative or local Working Together coordinator.
