Making Tax Digital

I am a chartered accountant and tax practitioner and qualified in 1971. In all my years in practice HMRC’s proposal to digitalise tax is the first mad idea to have given me sleepless nights.

My small self-employed clients mostly have a turnover of more than £10 000 but less than the current VAT registration threshold. Few of these that I can think of is computer savvy enough to be able to prepare information quarterly for submission electronically and none is capable of doing it right.

Many of my clients think that what they take from the business is wages and therefore an an allowable expense – which is why they employ my services.

Most can only just afford my modest fees and none will be able to pay me to do this work quarterly. For most of them it takes between six and nine...
