Nothing new in tax avoidance or evasion.

We at Taxation magazine pride ourselves on bringing our readers up to speed on the latest tax cases so I can only apologise to you all for being late with our report of the important case of Gadalias and Saulos. When I say late I am not exaggerating – this case was heard about 1 900 years ago (see tinyurl.com/mzjjyh6h).

The ancient papyrus containing the case report had been known about for many years but its full significance has only recently been realised. The story is a fascinating one which shows that techniques of tax evasion and avoidance (and both seem to have been in issue here) are nothing new. Indeed we can see here evidence of the use of nominee ownership transfer of assets abroad and payments dressed as loans – all in an attempt to get out of paying various taxes due on the holding...
