Fraudulent activity – wider than we imagine


It was a pleasure to attend this year’s CTA address in which Simon York former director of HMRC’s Fraud Investigation Service gave us his thoughts on 21st century solutions for tackling tax crime. I’ve never had to deal with tax fraud in my career so I have only a very sketchy view of what it might involve. My mental picture is probably of a UK business in which the owner does some false invoicing to cream off profits and stick them in an offshore bank account. Simon’s address brought home to me how narrow a view of tax fraud that now is. His narrative about the role of organised crime identity theft and cyber-attacks among many other techniques showed just what HMRC is up against.
