Ambitious timetable for tax adviser registration


The publication of the draft legislation on the registration of tax advisers is a very significant step towards regulation of our profession. When I first started in tax a measure like this would have been inconceivable and would have met with opposition from almost everybody working in tax. Now I think there will be broad support for the principle if not necessarily the detail of registration. There have been too many instances in recent years – many of them covered in this magazine – where taxpayers have been exploited by unscrupulous ‘advisers’: something had to be done.

This is not the place for a detailed examination of the proposals. We have commissioned an article giving an initial analysis of what has been published. I am sure that over the next year or so we will keep returning to the topic – it is something which...
