Tax practitioners can be divided into two stereotypes when it comes to appeals to the First-tier Tribunal.

First there are those who assume that turning up on the day steering clear of too much reliance on the law and trusting to the tribunal’s sense of fair play will win the day as it often did in the days of General Commissioners.

Second are the practitioners who look upon the tribunal as a miniature High Court beset with traps for the unwary and within whose portals they fear to set foot.

Keith Gordon’s excellent book in showing that neither caricature is true has something to offer to all.
